My guess (but that’s just as good as any other’s) is that it’s about semantics. The term Autopilot insinuates that the Teslas are autonomous, whereas Mercedes markets its tech as driver assistance, which at this level both systems are.

No. Autopilot means both air speed and altitude are maintained autonomously. The plane can’t maintain course with autopilot, the plane can’t take off and land with autopilot. It’s actually a very appropriate name for Tesla’s system.
